 Given Silver’s most notable appearance prior to Tunde was in the controversial Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which offered an intimate window into the inner lives of young people coming into their own, it would be easy to peg the new film as one with a teenage audience in mind. But for Silver, its significance runs deeper. “I would love for it to find a teen audience—only if they can handle it, as it’s a very heavy movie—but I think the message applies to people of all ages,” says Silver. “This movie is definitely listening to the teen audience, because if we look at suicide rates, the changing nature of gender expression and sexuality, and a lot of Black teens’ relationships with the police community, it’s universal, but it also acts as a mirror to what a lot of teens are going through today.”

Despite the grueling process of reliving these instances of violence over and over again—“It definitely affected me mentally to film those heavier scenes,” Silver notes—it was equally important for Silver and LeRoi to find moments of uplift too, not least in the scenes involving Tunde coming out to his parents, whose responses feel authentically loving. “When you have a visual representation of Black families accepting the LGBTQ+ community within their family members, it gives permission to people in society to do the same,” says Silver. “When Tunde reveals his identity to his parents, I loved that they instantly accept him. They understand that it’s more important to have Tunde alive and present in his full identity than to deny Tunde’s sexuality and risk not only losing Tunde’s life, but creating pain for the entire family.”
